Endorsing Torture
Splitting along party lines, with 5 Democrats abandoning their principles to join the party in power, the Senate has confirmed Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General. It’s been said that any vote in opposition above 30 would be considered a moral victory, but there is no victory of morals here in the end, despite the 36-60 result. The Republican Senators should be ashamed, but Joseph Lieberman, Ken Salazar, Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, and Bill Nelson should resign. They are fools and apologists for the use of torture, making them criminally complicit in every evil action taken before or since those memos were written. (And Max Baucus and Kent Conrad ought to have a good reason for not being present for the vote.)
