Not a Drop
Having spent three years in this sun-burned country, I understand that the drought conditions require a conscious and perpetual effort at conservation, and that water is a resource we all share and must share well. But after watching what the NSW state government did with the cross-city tunnel – building public infrastructure to the guaranteed benefit of a private corporation at the daily out-of-pocket expense of the citizenry – the idea that that’ll the same for water is a bit too dry if it’s meant as humor. NSW gathers many millions from a raft of real estate and other taxes. Balance the books, Mr. Iemma, and spend your budget wisely. Forcing us to pay private companies for public services is not good government. Oh, and desalination is just a short-term fix to begin with. If you really want me to pay for something, it better be worth the long-term costs you’re seeking to impose.
