The practice of colonial and imperialist dispossession of indigenous people never ended, at least not in Australia, where the Prime Minister is moving the nation away from every progressive action towards Land Rights and Native Title and furthering the nation’s distance from any possibility of reconciliation. The present land grab instance is legislation designed to covertly include acts of dispossession within a cloak of more positive actions and is being pushed through the House and Senate with an absolute minimum of debate. The government relies on the public being uninformed or distracted by phantom terror squads paddling across from Indonesia or retrograde labor laws or interest rate increases, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
