The World Below
It takes 5.1 hectares of the planet to support my lifestyle. If everybody on the planet lived like me, we’d need three planets. I have two problems with this kind of calculation: it makes invalid assumptions, and what’s a hectare? These things exist on the net to satisfy the psychological needs of the designers and to raise awareness of environmental issues the populations and governments of industrialized nations can effectively address, but I think the primary purpose is to assuage guilt in the designers and to allow them to feel superior to anyone with worse results than their own. Where are the comparative measures? How many hectares on average do people use? What is a hectare?
