More bombs in London, but two suspects arrested. That’s anti-terror law enforcement in action, although the police want more power yet. But frightening as these latest attacks were, calm and reason should prevail. Our societies have plenty of power, and not just in legal mechanisms, so great care should be taken in how we change, or if we change, our responses to hatred. International cooperation is working to good effect; let’s enhance that. Searching backbacks may seem prudent; it will certainly be an inconvenience, but there are still expectations of civil liberties to be managed. Each step we take toward infringing existing rights steepens the pitch of the “slippery slope.”
