Intervention
Sending the troops into East Timor to assist the government in restoring peace is a worthy action. The history of independence there has been fraught and deserves assistance. The action of the Timorese government in firing striking soldiers highlights societal problems there that must be resolved and precipitated the present events, but that won’t turn out well in a civil war, so Mr. Howard’s actions are worthy of Australia’s position in the region.
