Foreign Entanglements
When the CIA fact book says a government is “parliamentary democracy tending toward anarchy,” they’re not referring to the kind of non-system advocated by the anti-globalists, but rather the kind often seen in African nations, Liberia notably, i.e., every man for himself, especially if he’s got a gun. The conditions in the Solomon Islands are such that Australia and New Zealand are now preparing to provide peace-keeping troops, but not until the government there passes legislation to authorize the formal request for assistance. This is the kind of situation that has put and kept Marines in Haiti and NATO in the Balkans, and it is the kind of action that constitutes taking responsibility for improving the world as if superpower nations aren’t required. Similarly, Japan is freezing financial aid to Myanmar until they release Aung San Suu Kyi. Most aid dried up in 1988, when they first put her under arrest, so it’s not clear how this will help. Now, if China would step up to work on North Korea, and if the Middle East would grow up, and if the UN would intervene just about everywhere in Africa. . . .
