Faced with the death of someone so old and so successful [note: irony. ed.], it's difficult to say anything about Strom Thurmond. When he was alive, I regarded him as an ancient racist, whose life perpetuated attitudes that should have long passed from the political scene. Simplistic, I know, as Thurmond was not solely responsible for racial prejudice in the U.S. - he was only 100, after all. Now that he's dead, I have to acknowledge his war record and that he probably did believe he wasn't a bigot. He was, though, and if he'd had the sense to retire years ago, I wouldn't be in this position. Even after getting kicked out of paradise, Lucifer probably still regarded himself as an angel, and so it was with Thurmond.
