David Hicks and Howard’s Hiccups
Why has the Prime Minister stepped up now to demand trials for David Hicks and Mamdouh Habib, the Australian citizens trapped in Guantanamo Bay for the last two years? Because Australia and China had been the only two countries not to protest the illegal detention of their citizens? Because now we know of the prisoner abuses committed in Cuba, as in Iraq? Because there’s an election coming up and Mr. Howard needs to distance himself from the U.S. at last? Maybe a little from column A, a little from column B. . . .
